Cockroaches have been implicated in Salmonella food Poisoning. They are also known to harbor Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Coliform, and other bacterial pathogens.
Cockroach FAQ's:- Cockroaches require plenty of food, water, and shelter in order to thrive. Limiting any one of these necessities makes it more difficult for cockroach populations to become established and escalate in size.
- Cockroaches have been on earth for somewhere around 350 million years!
- Cockroaches are very adaptable and reproduce very fast.
- Most species prefer to live in moist, dark places.
- Cockroaches tend to eat whatever they can find.
- Cockroaches produce egg cases, or ootheca for their young to mature in.
- Once the eggs inside the egg case hatch, the young cockroaches (nymphs) will break open the egg case and emerge.
American Cockroach

Is the largest cockroach that infests buildings in the United States today. This insect may be recognized by a yellow "figure-8" pattern on the shield at the front of its body. Often called "Water Bugs" or "Palmetto Bugs".
Size: Up to 2 inches long.
Color: Reddish brown.
- The nymphs, or baby cockroaches, are also a reddish-brown color.
- Their ootheca are often glued to a surface and hold 6-14 nymphs.
- Tend to move into the home when the conditions outside become unfavorable, for example: extreme temperatures, excessive rain, etc.
Brown-banded Cockroach
The female and male brown banded cockroaches do not look much alike. The male is long and thin, while the female is more oval in shape.
Size: Adults are about 1/2-inch in length.
Color: Male is light brown. The female may have dark brown wings. Both sexes, however, have the lighter-colored bands running across the wings directly behind the prothorax.
- Fly when disturbed.
- Prefer environments with temperatures around 80°F.
- Produce offspring year round indoors.
- Females attach their ootheca on walls or ceilings and holds between 12-20 cockroaches.
German Cockroach
Recognized by the two dark, longitudinal stripes on the "shield" at the front of the body under which the head is located.
Size: About 1/2-inch in length.
Color: Brown.
- Enjoy humid environments, like a bathroom, with temperatures around 70°F.
- Able to produce offspring year round indoors.
- Females carry the ootheca with them until a few hours before the nymphal cockroaches are ready to emerge, the ootheca holds between 25-40 cockroaches.
Smoky Brown Cockroach
Is a ready flier and easily travels from trees into houses. They do not have any yellow or tan markings on the pronotum.
Size: As large as 1-1/2 inches in length.
Color: Dark mahogany brown.
- The nymphs are black with white markings in early stages and then become reddish-brown as they mature.
- Can be located in tree holes, building gutters, or mulch beds.
- Generally an outside inhabiting species, but indoors they are frequently found in attics.
- Female Smoky browns drop their ootheca and cover it with fecal material or debris to camouflage and holds around 18 nymphs.
